Advice from Incoming New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani

Zohran Mamdani, who won the New York City mayoral election in November, provided some advice in a video monologue this week regarding interacting with agents of the United States government’s Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE). In the minute and a half video titled “Know Your Rights When Dealing With ICE” at Mamdani’s YouTube page, Mamdani, who will become mayor on January 1, provided several pieces of advice that, if employed, may protect people from abuse and harm at the hands of government agents.

Big Brother in the Big Apple

“Big Brother is protecting you.” That is a quote from New York City Mayor Eric Adams in a Saturday article at Politico. Adams made the comment in defense of the extensive web of high-tech surveillance his city government deploys against people in America’s most populous city, as well as the mayor’s desire to expand the surveilling.

Mayor Defies State’s Coronavirus Shutdown

Martin “Modey” Hicks, the mayor of Grants, New Mexico, has had enough of the mandate that businesses remain closed in the name of countering coronavirus. Russell Contreras reported last week at the Associated Press that Hicks, in defiance of an ongoing shutdown order from New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham, “said he’s giving businesses permission to reopen on Monday and is ordering the police force in the city of about 9,000 people to prevent any State Police officers from issuing lockdown violation citations.”

Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman Wants Her City to Reopen Now

If many more politicians viewed the coronavirus crackdown the way Las Vegas Mayor Carolyn Goodman has viewed it, America may have avoided plummeting into economic devastation with tens of millions of people losing their jobs and with many small businesses closed down never to reopen due to the financial hit taken by their owners.

Many Americans may also have retained their ability to exercise freely individual rights, such as by traveling where they choose, visiting with friends and family, and taking other actions local, state, and national governments have forbade in the name of countering coronavirus.

The Return of Mayor Kucinich?

It has been 40 years since Dennis Kucinich completed his term as mayor of Cleveland, Ohio in 1979. Kucinich, who had been tagged as the “boy mayor” given his age and youthful appearance when mayor, went on to later hold elected office in the Cleveland city council from 1983 to 1985, the Ohio state senate from 1995 to 1997, and the United States House of Representatives from 1997 to 2013, all as a Cleveland Democrat.

Next year, we may see Kucinich again run to be Cleveland’s mayor. Former long-time Cleveland Plain Dealer Editorial Director Brent Larkin wrote Friday at cleveland.com that Kucinich has lately been out in Cleveland taking actions consistent with someone considering running for mayor and that several people “familiar with Kucinich’s thinking” are saying Kucinich is likely to run.
