Even the Longest US Government Shutdown in History Does Not Stop New Foreign Aid Spending

Weeks into the longest United States government shutdown in history, the administration of President Donald Trump had cut welfare spending on food for Americans and even demanded that state governments also cut such aid. At the same time, the US government was rushing to spend money on providing new aid to foreigners in Caribbean counties that had just been hit by the latest hurricane to pass through the area.

New Peer-Reviewed Study: Lockdowns Are No Good Against Coronavirus

Across the world, people have been suffering because of coronavirus crackdowns marketed as means to limit or even stop the spread of coronavirus. Yet, looking around, many people have observed that it seems there is little to no benefit from oppressive measures such as stay-at-home and business closure orders given that coronavirus spread and dangers appear not to be significantly reduced in countries that impose harsh mandates as compared to those that maintain greater respect for liberty and commerce.

The same seems to be the situation when comparing state and local governments in America that have adopted policies justified as reactions to coronavirus that range from draconian to rather limited.

Mayor Defies State’s Coronavirus Shutdown

Martin “Modey” Hicks, the mayor of Grants, New Mexico, has had enough of the mandate that businesses remain closed in the name of countering coronavirus. Russell Contreras reported last week at the Associated Press that Hicks, in defiance of an ongoing shutdown order from New Mexico Governor Michelle Lujan Grisham, “said he’s giving businesses permission to reopen on Monday and is ordering the police force in the city of about 9,000 people to prevent any State Police officers from issuing lockdown violation citations.”
