The Iran War has been unpopular among Americans since the beginning. Now it has reached the point where it appears it would be voted down in the Republican-majority United States House of Representatives — if House leadership would just allow a floor vote on the matter.
Interviewed Sunday by Margaret Brennan on Face the Nation at CBS, United States House of Representatives members Thomas Massie (R-KY) and Ro Khanna (D-CA) argued that President Donald Trump exceeded his authority in ordering this weekend’s US military attack on Iran. The US Congress, they declared. should take action to prevent more use of the US military against Iran.
Rep. Matt Gaetz’s (R-FL) resolution (H.Con.Res. 30) that would, pursuant to the War Powers Resolution, require the removal of United States military members from Somalia is on the schedule for consideration in the US House of Representatives this week. The resolution directs the president to remove all US military members from the African country within one year, except for those assigned to protect the US embassy.
Why should House members support the resolution? Gaetz made his case for a “yes” vote in an episode of his Firebrand podcast. The March 28 episode is titled “Why Are We In Somalia?”. In answer to the episode title’s question, Gaetz argues in a commentary at the beginning of the episode that there is no good reason for the US military to be in Somalia and plenty of good reasons for it to leave.
Might congressional action soon restrict United States support for Saudi Arabia’s war on Yemen?
Last week there was much media coverage of the United Sates House of Representatives voting to approve a resolution (H. Con. Res. 83) commonly described as seeking to prevent the Trump administration from engaging in war against Iran. However, take a look at the wording of the resolution, says foreign intervention opponent and former House member Ron Paul, and you will find that most of the resolution is purposed “to build up animosity” toward Iran. Paul discussed the resolution in a new interview with host Anand Naidoo at the CGTN show The Heat.
Indeed, the resolution is chock-full of talking points in favor of war with Iran. It starts with declarations that Iran is “a leading state sponsor of terrorism and engages in a range of destabilizing activities across the Middle East” and that Iran General Qassim Suleimani, whose assassination was carried out upon President Donald Trump’s order, was “the lead architect of much of Iran’s destabilizing activities throughout the world.”
